Everything is about me.

As it turns out there is no one I like to think about, talk about, hear about, complain about, or care about than myself.

I am my absolute favorite person. Some worry or concern someone else is having? Whammo! It's about me. The conversion rate of it being about them to being about me is really fast. Like sometimes a matter of seconds.

I think I need to watch this video again.

Bah. I have more to say. Cause I can talk about me for hours and hours. But I ran out of time.

Ah, maybe I don't need to say much more. That video says it all. And quite well too.

  1. What a hilarious, on-point video!

I am guilty of the same thing. Probably almost everyone can relate. After all, love of self is completely human and natural. Not all of it is wrong, either. If it were, I doubt Jesus would have said that the second greatest command was to love our neighbors as ourselves. But we so easily go overboard on the self love, don't we?

Take heart, Alison: you are no narcissist! I am well acquainted with narcissism through personal experience with one, and that is SO not you! The really dangerous people are the ones who aren't self-aware enough to recognize this tendency in themselves, and who just don't care if/when it is pointed out to them. It's scary, but such people do exist. And you, my friend, are NOT one of them. If God is convicting you of a particular instance of selfishness, repent of it and then walk in the freedom of His forgiveness, but don't think for a moment that the video is who you ARE. You are an introspective, sensitive person made in the image of God, with a unique perspective that needs to be expressed in order to more fully exhibit that divine image, and as long as you are doing so while also loving the people around you, you'll always be in perfect balance. :-)

  2. Thank you, Heather. I think you are right that not all of it is wrong. But I do believe that in the end Jesus told us to love our neighbor MORE than ourselves. Well, He told us to love our neighbor as He has loved us, which is definitely more!

So I think that it is okay to love ourselves so long as it is in the proper order. Which I think is:
    Love to the Lord
    Love to the neighbor
    Love of the world
    Love of self

If that order is turned on it's head there are big problems! I do see myself slipping into making myself a priority and that is no good. But you are correct that being aware of it is the first step toward shunning evil as sins against the Lord!

    Little by little.
